The weekend’s top news around the Big Ten and college football was the passing of former Penn State head coach Joe Paterno.
Iowa’s head coach, Kirk Ferentz, had faced many of Joe Paterno’s teams over the years and the two schools even developed a nice rivalry. Both of these coaches had a mutual respect for one another and when Penn State plays Iowa next season, the game is going to have different feel to it without Joe Paterno on the sideline.
Both Kirk Ferentz and Iowa athletic director Gary Barta had these positive things to say about Joe Paterno.
Kirk Ferentz
It is certainly a very, very sad day. The passing of Coach Paterno is a huge loss; there will never be another Joe Paterno. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Paterno family.”
Gary Barta
Joe Paterno has meant so much to college athletics over such a long period of time. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his immediate family first and foremost, and then, certainly, to the extended Penn State family.
